Festival - A ‘Special’ for Kids

The Ilawarra Folk Festival at Slacky Flat Bulli is one of the most Family Friendly events in the state.  With a venue (The Shed) dedicated entirely to kids, there is plenty of activity and entertainment for the young and the young at heart.
The Beauty of all this is kids 12 and under get in free while kids from 12 – 16 pay only $20 for the entire four days of the festival.

Already, noted kids entertainers, Mike Jackson and Mic Conway (Captain Matchbox) have been incorporated into the programme while story teller Lilly Pilly and the ABC’s Nick Rheinberger will keep the kids enthralled.  Others to be part of the programme will be Geoffery (Banjo Paterson) Graham, Margaret Bradford teaching instrument making, and The Puddin’ Eaters and Bertie McMahon.  Throw in Aviva Sheb’a, Brett Robin Wood, Five Leaves Left and Wendy Regan and you won’t be able to drag the kids away.

The Festival runs from Thursday 15th to Sunday 18th January at The Bulli Showgrounds at Slacky Flat.  The showgrounds will become the Mecca for Folk enthusiasts throughout the state with over 500 performers gathering to celebrate the 24th award winning Illawarra Folk Festival.

In keeping with the evolving nature of the genre the Festival will feature music from different cultures and different styles.  You can pick up on Gypsy, Cajun, African, Roots, blues, bluegrass and celtic as well as the traditional Singers and songwriters and Australian Traditional music; all performed by some of Australia’s best.

Heading a strong overseas contingent will be Bettina Schelker from Switzerland, Anne Vriend from Canada, the Whitetop Mountaineers from the USA and the Beez from Berlin. As usual there will be a strong local and interstate contingent with Kavisha Mazzella, Mic Conway, Mick Thomas (Weddings Parties Anything), Queen Juanita and the Zydeco Cowboys, Marcus Sturrock (WA), Wongawilli and the entertaining, Nerds With Music.

With its 11 venues and 500 performers the hardest thing to decide is what to do and what to see.  If you can’t decide then you could head on over to the Slacky Flat Bar for the all round party!
